Magnesia carbon bricks

Magnesia carbon bricks are a type of refractory brick that is widely used in the steel industry, particularly in electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and ladle furnaces.

Composition

Magnesia carbon bricks are made from a combination of:

  1. Magnesia (MgO): A highly refractory oxide that provides high temperature resistance and thermal shock resistance.

  2. Carbon: In the form of graphite or carbon black, which improves the brick's thermal conductivity, reduces thermal expansion, and enhances its resistance to slag penetration.

Properties

Magnesia carbon bricks offer several key benefits:

  1. High temperature resistance: Magnesia carbon bricks can withstand temperatures up to 1800°C (3272°F).

  2. Thermal shock resistance: They can withstand sudden and repeated changes in temperature.

  3. Slag resistance: The carbon component helps to prevent slag penetration and erosion.

  4. Low thermal expansion: This reduces the risk of thermal shock and cracking.

Applications

Magnesia carbon bricks are commonly used in:

  1. Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs): For steel production, particularly for melting and refining steel.

  2. Ladle Furnaces: For refining and alloying steel.

  3. Tundish: A refractory-lined vessel used to transfer molten steel from the ladle to the continuous caster.
